Once I was able to take my first step as a child, my next step followed with an ax kick!
Ok…well maybe not right away, but as a little grasshopper, I will always hold dear memories of running around the Dojo at the Jae Hun Kim Tae Kwon Do Institute in Boston. Kicking and punching in my little uniform, breaking boards with my tiny balled up fist while I yell “HAAAA”, gazing at my father’s shiny golden three-tier trophy that was a foot taller than me at the time, and goofing around with the equipment, which I shouldn’t have been doing, but I felt dangerously entitled because my father was the instructor.
My father, Michael O’Malley, has been practicing Tae Kwon Do since he was a young man at thirteen years old and still does to this day. He has competed all around the world starting from 1976 through 1982 and was elected US Team Captain in 1980 and Team Coach in 1984. He is a 7th-degree black belt and was inducted into the Tae Kwon Do hall of fame in New York in 2007 and currently has his own TKD school in Peabody, MA.
Though it’s been many years since my fond childhood TKD school memories and even longer since I physically practiced TKD, I realized that I never actually left it behind, nor do I have to. The martial art philosophies can be practiced anywhere at anytime!
When entering the dojo there are 8 tenets written on 2 large banners in big black letters on the wall. You face these words as you practice, your instructor stands in between them as they direct you in your training. They are a reminder, a source of inspiration, and a creed to live by.
- Courtesy
- Integrity
- Perseverance
- Self-Control
- Indomitable Spirit
- Improvement of Mind & Body
- Ethical Self-Conduct
- Unity Among Members
These 8 tenets can seem so insignificant in just black and white, but when applied they can change lives, they can expand your business, they can create new and exciting relationships. But it all starts with YOU! Never forget that you are the center of the circle, the balance that keeps everything within your radius revolving.
I implore you as a business owner and a boss lady, lead by example, keep yourself physically and emotionally healthy, stay strong and in control, keep pushing then push harder! Say NO! You are undefeatable!
Kick down the walls that are holding you back from moving forward and progressing and punch through the belly of the beast that keeps telling you its impossible!
Practice these ideas every day and I promise you, you will be a business black belt in no time!
Now go kick some ass!
