As we stand on the brink of the New Year, let’s pledge to resist the urge to conform to others’ expectations and avoid resolutions that don’t resonate with our true selves. In a recent Forbes Health survey, a staggering 62% of respondents admitted feeling pressured to set resolutions.

Consider this your friendly reminder that succumbing to pressure is stressful, and comparing yourself to others can steal away the joy you seek. So, how about we let go of the pressure, embrace joy over stress, and stride into the New Year with something far more extraordinary than the conventional?

Keys to a Stress-Free New Year:

#1 Lower the Bar

Let’s kick off the year by simplifying our expectations. Break down any grand goals into smaller, more manageable easy actions. Rather than aiming for an ambitious lump sum in savings, start with a modest and achievable savings amount (1% is great!). Progress is progress, no matter how small.

#2 Get Emotional

Whether we admit it or not, our emotions play a significant role in shaping our lives. Connect with your feelings – be it anger, sadness, or passion – and use them as fuel for your journey. Close your eyes and vividly imagine the life you aspire to lead when you achieve financial freedom. Envision the experiences, the sense of security, and the freedom to pursue your passions. This emotional connection can serve as a powerful motivator.

#3 Make the Change Crystal-Clear

Regardless of your stance on SMART goals, being intentional and specific about your hopes for the future is crucial. For instance, if you hope to build your nest egg for emergencies and opportunities, you could say, “I will have $x in my savings account by 12/31/2024.” In our eyes, it’s even clearer to make it, “I will sleep well at night knowing each time I make an income, I am transferring x% to savings in order to have a brighter future.” Whatever is more crystal-clear for you, do that rather than some formula.
